Can I link Instagram to Facebook to recover my account?

Short answer

Linking helps only if the Instagram and Facebook accounts were already connected in Accounts Center before you lost access, because you cannot add a link to an account you cannot log in to. If they were connected, you may be able to log in with Facebook or reset access from Accounts Center. Linking does not reverse a ban: a disabled account still needs an appeal.

What linking Instagram to Facebook actually does

Meta's Accounts Center lets you connect your Instagram and Facebook profiles. Connected accounts can share login options, security settings and some features. That connection is useful in two situations: you forgot the password or lost the email, or you want a second route to prove ownership.

It does not do three things people expect. It does not unban an account that Instagram disabled. It does not work if the accounts were never connected before the problem. And it does not give you access if Facebook is locked too.

Step 1: find out whether your accounts are linked

  1. On the Instagram login screen, try your Facebook email or phone number with your Facebook password, or look for a saved account you can tap to log in. Meta says this works only if both accounts are in the same Accounts Center and allowed to log in to each other (Log in to Instagram).
  2. Check your email for old messages from Instagram or Meta mentioning Accounts Center or a connected account.
  3. If you can open Facebook, go to Settings, then Accounts Center, and see whether your Instagram profile is listed under Accounts.

Step 2: recover through the link

  1. On the Instagram login screen, enter the email or phone number and password of your Facebook account, or tap the saved account if one is shown. If two-factor authentication is on, Meta says you cannot use this route on an unrecognized device.
  2. In Facebook, open Settings, then Accounts Center, then Password and security, and use the options to change the password or review where you are logged in for the Instagram account.
  3. Follow any verification prompts, which may include a code to your email or phone.
  4. Once inside, change the password, turn on two-factor authentication with an authenticator app and update the contact details.

Common problems when logging in with Facebook

  • The Facebook login option or the saved account does not appear. Meta says the two accounts must be in the same Accounts Center and allowed to log in to each other. Check that in Accounts Center, and log in to Facebook in the app or the browser first, then return to Instagram.
  • It logs you into the wrong profile. You may have two Facebook accounts. Log out of the other one and try again.
  • It says the accounts are not connected. The link was probably removed. Use the standard recovery flow instead.
  • It asks for a code you cannot receive. Choose the option for more help and follow the identity steps.

If the accounts are not linked

You can still recover a forgotten-password or hacked account through Instagram's own flows. On the login screen choose "Forgot password?" or "Get help logging in" and request a code or link by email or SMS. Meta's Help Center says that if you can no longer access the email address or phone number you registered with and the accounts were not linked, it cannot give you access (Lost access to email or phone number). Where the "Need more help" support request is offered, the identity steps can include a video selfie. If someone else took over the account, start at instagram.com/hacked.

If the message on screen is that the account was disabled, linking is the wrong tool. Follow our guide to appealing a disabled account.

What to say when recovery asks for details

If a recovery form has a text box, a short and factual note works best.

Appeal template

Hello, I am the owner of @[username]. I lost access on [date] and I can no longer use the email or phone linked to the account. The account is connected to my Facebook profile [name] in Accounts Center. I can verify my identity with a video selfie and my ID. Please help me regain access.

The best time to link is before there is a problem. A short checklist:

  • Connect your Instagram and Facebook profiles in Accounts Center.
  • Use an email address you control and keep it current. Add a phone number too.
  • Turn on two-factor authentication with an authenticator app, not only SMS, and save the backup codes somewhere offline.
  • Review the list of apps with access to the account and remove those you do not use.
  • Use a password that you do not reuse on any other site.

What to do right after you get back in

Meta may force a few security steps after you recover through Facebook, and you should complete them even if they feel tedious. Set a new password that you do not use elsewhere, review the devices that are logged in and sign out of any you do not recognize, confirm or replace the recovery email and phone number, and turn on two-factor authentication with an authenticator app. Check the connected apps list and remove anything you do not use. If you found unknown posts or messages, delete them and warn your followers that the account was compromised.

  1. On Instagram, open your profile, the menu, then Settings and activity, and choose Accounts Center.
  2. Select Add accounts and log in to the Facebook profile you want to connect.
  3. Choose which features to share, such as login and posting. Linking for login is the one that helps with recovery.
  4. Check that both accounts appear in the list and that the Facebook account has its own two-factor authentication and a working recovery email.

When linking will not help

Linking cannot help if the account was never connected, if Facebook is also disabled, if the recovery email and phone are gone and Meta cannot verify your identity, or if the account was deleted after the appeal deadline. Websites that promise to "link and unlock" an account for a fee, or that ask for your password, are scams. Meta does not sell account recovery.

Frequently asked questions

Can I link a disabled Instagram account to Facebook?

Not after the account is disabled. The link must already exist. A disabled account is recovered only through an appeal.

What if my Facebook account is locked too?

Fix Facebook first through its own recovery and identity checks. Our guide on a locked Facebook account covers the steps.

Is it safe to connect accounts?

Yes, with strong security. Connecting means that losing control of one account can affect the other, so protect both with two-factor authentication.

How long does recovery through Facebook take?

If logging in with Facebook works, it takes minutes. If you need an identity check, it can take hours to a few days.

Do I need the same name on both accounts?

No, but matching details such as the email address and phone number make the checks easier.

Does linking give Meta more of my data?

Linked accounts share some information for login and features, as described in Meta's privacy settings. You can limit sharing or unlink later in Accounts Center.

Already appealed and still locked out?

If you have followed these steps and the platform rejected the appeal, or the account earns you money and you cannot risk another mistake, we can review your case. Send the username, the ban notice and the date on Telegram and we will tell you, before you pay anything, whether we can take it. No service can guarantee reinstatement: the decision always belongs to the platform.
